Music Club

I have always loved music. From my first little green record player playing Donny Osmond albums, I have been obsessed with listening to music. Hopefully my Music Club is a chance for me to share songs that I love and hopefully help you discover new music or bring back amazing memories. Click here for my list to date.

U2 “Pride (In the Name of Love)”

U2 PrideI had just started second year university when this song came out and U2 wasn’t very well known yet in Canada. I had been listening to them for a bit but most of my friends still didn’t know them. I remember being at a local night club (for those from Victoria you might remember New York New York) and watching the video on the big screen. And the conversation being around who was this band and did with think they would catch on. Guess they have done okay. Released 1984.

Alex & Sierra “Say Something”

These two were the only reasons I got sucked into watching X Factor last year. I really didn’t like the show, but I really liked this duo. Thank goodness they won. Their first album drops October 7 so looking forward to hearing them singing original music. But for now, I’ll keep enjoying their covers of songs like “Say Something”. Released 2013.

John Waite “Missing You”

John Waite Missing YouThere are some songs that just ooze ’80s (okay there are lot of songs that do that) but this one transports me back to the point I can even envision my lace socks and matching lace scrunchy. I always think of John Waite as the English version of our Canadian Corey Hart. There is actually a revised version of the song by Allison Kraus and John Waite which is great, but the original is the best. Released 1984.

Enjoy the grown up version with Allison Krause

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band “Fishin’ in the Dark”

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Fishin in the DarkI learned to two step to this song so it has a special place in my heart. Spent many years traveling around Canada, meeting up with people in my industry. Most evenings ended up somewhere dancing. But this girl from Victoria knew nothing about country until she hung out with folks from the Prairies. Learning to two step was a favourite. I never got great at it, stepped on many toes, but loved every minute of it. And this song is perfect for setting the two step mood!

Sam Smith “Stay with Me”

Sam SmithI’m going to try and make Mondays “new music Mondays”. New being anything in the last year that is!! So first up is Sam Smith. What an outstanding voice he has. Reminds me of the male version of Adele. There is something about his inflections that make his rendition of this song beautiful and unique. Released 2014.

Bruno Mars – “Lazy Song”

Bruno Mars The Lazy SongWho can’t relate to the lyrics on Bruno Mars “Lazy Song”. We all have days like this. It’s another one of those songs that just make you happy. Nothing serious. Just fun. I have seen Bruno Mars twice in concert and probably one of my top 5 performers. He and his band put on an incredible show full of singing, humour, dancing and making sure that every person there is up on their feet dancing with them. My favourite moment was the 65+ year old in front of me last time double fist pumping to every song. That is a good concert!!! Released 2011.
