My son got all dressed up today for a job interview and reality of him growing up hit me hard.
It is one thing to see them every day getting a bit taller and a bit more mature. But put dress pants and a dress shirt on them and suddenly you have a grown up.
I could suddenly see him as the man he is becoming.
And that was was exciting. I am ready to see him launch into the next stage of his life. He still has a year of high school ahead but that seems like nothing. One short year before a lifetime.
The other night I also sat in a meeting where my older son was doing all the presenting.
It was another moment of realizing that most of my work is done. That he has launched and doing a great job. And that he doesn’t need me as much anymore. People were looking to him for answers. He was the expert.
The steps to adulthood are one thing to go through yourself but watching your kids go through those steps is fascinating.
I compare it to going to Disneyland. When you go as a child your sense of wonder and experience is so much fun. But then you take your kids there and it is magnified. I found it so much more fun taking my children and experiencing it through their eyes. Growing up is the same.
I hope their life experiences continue to be a Disneyland experience. A few scary moments like Space Mountain but lots of fun moments like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride!Share this post!
